Twelfth Night, Malvolio: ‘Some are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon em’
Posted by Chichi in Cartoons and Illustration, tags: MEN, Performer, theatreThe intention was to draw this creature before Twelfth Night, however, snow got in the way. Here is my first ever drawing of Malvolio from Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. Years ago, a theatre director mate of mine was searching for a Malvolio for her production, so, I suggested a talented compadre called Eddie Marsan for the role. After his audition, she, quite rightly, snapped him up. Eddie played the most astounding Malvolio I have ever had the pleasure of seeing on stage. He’s one of those rare actors with an excellent sense of humour (believe me, I’ve met terrible bores on the boards), great dedication to his craft, and he’s a thoroughly decent bloke especially because he once helped me move from one grotty London flat to another during those days when I was a broke desperate actor. So there you go, a little story behind the image. Eddie ‘achieve(d) greatness,’ he is now Hollywood famous. And quite rightly so. Quite rightly so, I say.

A school outing to the theatre in a provincial town made Shakespeare real for me, rather than just readings of impenetrable stuff in class; Malvolio was marvellous.
Splendid yellow stockings and cross-gartering, made all the more impressive by the near-monochrome of the rest of the drawing. I think he’s rather magnificent!
You would have to agree to everything this fellow says in real life. Terrific drawings on your site!
